Coral/OC3 monitoring machines

As part of the NLANR passive OC3 network measurement and analysis activity. we are utilizing compact, rack mountable PC-type computers. The machines are being delivered as turn-key, by means of system integrators.

The current configuration of OC3mon machines, to be delivered fully compiled, with the operating system copied from a master disk consists of:

The component/system cost prices are approximated, based on a June 1998 time frame, and the price should have come down since. The configuration was developed in collaboration with a system integrator in San Diego (Computer Parts Plus, phone 619 874-3800). CPP has a copy of the FreeBSD-based software running in NLANR-deployed OC3mon monitors as of July 1998, and is willing to install a copy onto new machines.

An alternative source for OC3mon machines is located at the US east coast (The AccuMatics Group, phone 301 989 1149).

The rack-mountable system comes with a locking gate, covering the power up and reset buttons, as well as the floppy disk drive. The locking gate also provides access to a cleanable air filter in front of the fan.

The back side shows the power cable and key board attached. Also visible are the external SCSI connector, the fiber attachments of the two FORE PCA200E cards, and the Ethernet 10/100BT and screen controller connectors.

The open machine shows the two FORE cards in the lower left corner, and the (spring mounted) cage for the two hard drives in the upper right. The upper left shows the 250 Watt power supply.

The top view shows the 400MHz Pentium II processor between the power supply and the controller cards. The metal bar on top helps suspending the controller cards.
